balsam is obtained from the scorched & wounded trunk of the tree Myroxylon pereirae (Royle) Klotzsch syn. Myroxylon balsamum (L.) Harms var. pereirae (Royale) Harms, growing in
El Salvador.
Appearance: A dark brown glistening non-sticky, non-drying liquid, appearing yellowish- brown in thin layers.
Odour: Pleasant, characteristic balsamic/vanillic.
Flavour: Bitter, spicy, persistent.
Solubility : Insoluble in water & fatty oils, freely soluble in ethanol; miscible with castor oil.
Boiling Point : 305C @ 760mm Hg.
