PERU BALSAM


DEFINITION: Peru balsam is obtained from the scorched & wounded trunk of the tree Myroxylon pereirae (Royle) Klotzsch syn. Myroxylon balsamum (L.) Harms var. pereirae (Royale) Harms, growing in El Salvador.

APPEARANCE: A dark brown glistening non-sticky, non-drying liquid, appearing yellowish- brown in thin layers.

ODOUR: Pleasant, characteristic balsamic/vanillic.

FLAVOUR: Bitter, spicy, persistent.

SOLUBILITY: Insoluble in water & fatty oils, freely soluble in ethanol; miscible with castor oil.

BOILING POINT: 305C @ 760mm Hg.

IDENTIFICATION: Passes Eu Pharm. 5.2 requirements.

APPEARANCE OF SOLUTION: Passes Eu Pharm. 5.2 requirements.

RELATED SUBSTANCES: Passes Eu Pharm. 5.2 requirements.

RELATIVE DENSITY @ 20C: 1.14 to 1.17

SAPONIFICATION VALUE: 230 to 255

ARTIFICIAL BALSAMS: ABSENT: passes Eu Pharm 5.2 tests.

TURPENTINE: ABSENT: passes Eu Pharm 5.2 tests.

FATTY OILS: ABSENT: passes Eu Pharm 5.2 tests.

ASSAY: ∑ balsamic esters: 45% to 75%.
