4. FIRST-AID MEASURES:
Inhalation: Remove from site of exposure into the fresh air. Keep at rest. Obtain medical attention.
Eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 mins. Contact doctor if symptoms persist.
Skin contact: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap & water, flushing copiously with plenty of water. If irritation persists, seek medical advice.
Ingestion: Rinse out mouth with water. Seek medical advice immediately.
Other: When assessing measures to be taken, consult any Risk & Safety Phrases (Section 15).
5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES.
Extinguishing media recommended: Use CO2, Dry Powder or Foam type of Extinguishers, spraying extinguishing media to base of flames. Do not use direct water jet on burning material.
Special measures: Avoid inhalation of vapour. Keep away from ignition sources and do not smoke. Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus & protective clothing.
IExtinguishing procedures: Beware of closed containers which may build up pressure when exposed to heat. Cool with water spray.
6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES.
Personal precautions: Avoid inhalation & direct contact with skin & eyes. in case of major spillages. use individual protective equipment (safety glasses, waterproof-boots, suitable protective clothing). Environment precautions: Keep away from drains, soils, and groundwaters and surface waters.
Cleaning up methods for spillages: Keep away all the potential sources of ignition. Physically contain spilled material. Cover with an inert or non-combustible inorganic absorbent material, or sweep up and remove to an approved disposal container. Observe state, federal & local disposal regulations.
7. HANDLING & STORAGE.
Precautions in handling: Apply best manufacturing practice & approved industrial hygiene practices. Maintain proper ventilation over storage area. Observe good personal hygiene. Do not eat, drink or smoke whilst handling.
Storage conditions: Store well topped-up, in tightly closed original container, in a cool, dark, dry & ventilated area, away from heat sources. Minimise air contact.
Fire protection: Keep away from ignition sources & naked flames. Take precautions to avoid static discharges (by earthing containers etc.) in working area whilst pouring.
8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/ PERSONAL PROTECTION.
Respiratory protection: Avoid breathing product vapour. Apply local ventilation where possible.
Ventilation: Ensure good ventilation of working area.
Hand protection: Avoid all skin contact. Use appropriate chemically resistant gloves & protective clothing.
Eye protection: Use goggles or a face shield.
Work/Hygiene practices: Wash hands with soap & water after handling.
9. PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.
Appearance & odour: Dark brown viscous liquid soluble in ethanol and miscible with castor oil. Odour is pleasant, balsamic/vanillic.

10. STABILITY & REACTIVITY.
Reactivity: The material presents no significant reactivity hazards by itself, or in contact with water. Hazardous polymerization will not occur with this product. Avoid contact with strong acids, alkalis or oxidising agents.
Decomposition: Liable to cause smoke & acrid fumes during combustion: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide & other non-identified organic compounds may be formed.
11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION.
Acute LD50 (orl, rt): > 5g/Kg FCT (1974) 12, p951-2
Dermal LD50 (skn, rbt): > 10g/Kg. FCT (1974) 12, p951-2
Irritation: found non-irritating to humans at 8% in petrolatum FCT (1974) 12, p951-2.
Sensitisation: 7 sensitisation reactions in 25 human volunteers in a maximization test using 8% PB in petrolatum (Kligman, 1971). Peru balsam (8%) also tested by repeated insult patch test procedure (Shelanski & Shelanski, 1953), using 15 24-hr exposurcs in 50 human subjects, without producing sensitization reactions (Shelanski, 1971) - see FCT (1974) 12, p951-2. Using weight of evidence, PB is now more generally considered a skin & eye irritant & a mild allergen/common sensitizer, can cause contact dermatitis, & can cross react with styrax resinoid, benzyl alcohol, essential oils etc.
